Believe it or not, I spent my first three years of college as a devout Neuroscience major. You will not find it in my professional experience or education sections of my resume, but buried in my undergraduate transcripts you'll find a woman who was committed to the field because she wanted to understand the biological basis of how people learn. During my junior and senior years of undergrad, I was asked to teach a lab section of an introductory biology course and that is where my love of teaching truly began.
It was this experience and a side quest of a *major* Major change (hence why I graduated with a degree in English, which was previously my minor), that led me to apply for a teaching position at a Title I high school in Phoenix, Arizona. Even after I completed my studies within the English department, I still wanted to teach science. One thing led to another and soon enough I was solely responsible for a developing district-wide curriculum for an "Anatomy-and-Physiology-meets-Introduction-to-Public-Health" course. Once I got a taste of truly designing my own curriculum, learning materials, and learning experiences, I knew I still wanted to be an educator of-sorts, but with a more full-time creative flair.
I came to learn about the field of Instructional Design when on the job hunt prior to my move to Denver. After seeing a few postings for that particular role, I began to research the job responsibilities. I was excited to find that it was a great fit for my new career goals! Not long after, I began working in my current role at the Rocky Mountain Public Health Training Center creating workforce training opportunities for public health professionals in the Rocky Mountain region. Who doesn't love a full circle moment?
Since then, I have continued to grow as a designer, a coder, and as an instructor. I deeply enjoy the unique triumphs and challenges of adult learning and continuing to be a support figure (much like when I was a classroom teacher) for our "students."
