My Role: Lead Instructional Designer
Project Type: Video Creation
Software Tools: Camtasia (Video Editing), Adobe Audition (Narration), Figma (Collaborative Storyboarding, Vector Graphics)
Audience: K-12 Educators and School Personnel, Community Organizers, and Researchers
Year: 2025
This script was written by an external team of subject matter experts and was delivered to me for review and questions. The script was written before a learning medium outcome was selected which had some impact on the final decision by my supervisor to make this a video module. Overall, this video would have a duration of 30 minutes.
My review consisted of communicating script questions with Subject Matter Experts and determining which parts of the script needed to be rewritten to fit a video narration perspective.
Before I began to storyboard, I reviewed the branding guidelines given to me by our subject matter experts and created design palettes to ensure consistency throughout the design.
Then, I began to storyboard the video using Figma. In the past, I have used Adobe Illustrator to edit vector images and plan storyboards. But for this project, I wanted to challenge myself to complete the same task in Figma. In the end, this was a good step for not only my own growth but for the collaborative nature of Figma.
As I mentioned, Figma ended up being helpful for it's collaborative nature. Due to a shortened deadline on this project, a new Instructional Designer on our team was assigned to work with me. We began our partnership with a kick-off meeting where I introduced them to the overall goals of the project, the branding guidelines, available assets, and overall design choices I had already made.
I communicated regularly with this designer to set reasonable deadlines and answer design questions. I was able to give clear, actionable feedback about their design work while also encouraging them to innovate.
Once storyboarding was complete, I was able to begin creating and animating the video. I determined what animations would be used and in what capacity (i.e. sliding animations would be used for title assets, fade transitions between slides, etc.). I also designed a title slide and selected background music that would be utilized for all remaining modules.
Once the video was complete, I edited subtitles to meet accessibility standards and implemented feedback from both my internal team and the external subject matter experts.
